How to pay for IVF when a grant is not enough

Grants cover only a small share of the families who apply. This guide walks through the other ways people pay for treatment, in plain language, so you can compare your options with clear eyes.

The main ways families finance IVF

Most families combine two or three of these. None of them is right for everyone, and the best choice depends on your credit, your clinic, and your timeline.

    Clinic payment plans

Many fertility clinics offer in-house payment plans that spread the cost of a cycle over several months. Ask your clinic's billing department what plans exist before assuming you must pay everything up front.

    Medical loans

Some lenders specialize in loans for medical and fertility treatment. Interest rates and terms vary widely, so compare the total repayment amount, not just the monthly payment.

    Fertility financing companies

A number of companies partner directly with clinics to bundle treatment, medication, and sometimes refund programs into one financing package. Read the refund conditions carefully before signing.

    Credit unions and personal loans

A personal loan from a credit union can carry a lower rate than a medical credit card. Membership requirements are usually simple, and you can often check your rate without affecting your credit score.

    HSA and FSA funds

If you have a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, many fertility expenses qualify as medical expenses. Using pre-tax dollars effectively reduces the cost by your tax rate.

    Employer fertility benefits

More employers now offer fertility benefits through programs like Progyny, Carrot, or Maven. Ask your HR department directly, since these benefits are not always listed in the main benefits summary.

Questions worth asking before you sign

Whatever option you consider, these questions will help you compare offers on equal footing.

    • What is the total amount I will repay, including all interest and fees?
    • Is there a penalty for paying the loan off early?
    • What happens to my payment plan if a cycle is cancelled?
    • Does the financing cover medications, or only the procedure itself?
    • If this is a refund or shared-risk program, what exactly triggers the refund?
